Little Women (2019) Smart, Sensitive & Fresh Retelling of the Classic Tale

Little Women 2019 adaptation made the story fresh and alive. It didn’t fall on the trap of trying too hard and eases its way into the plot. For a few hours there you get to travel to the best parts of the 18th Century. It was simply a delightful experience, and the characters didn’t overpower each other despite the obvious strength of each female celebrity in the story.

It was a jolly, colorful and relaxing film that was able to deliver the necessary impact and lines that will make your heartbeat. I loved every jolly minute of it- After several months of drought and wishing for a refreshing film to watch inside the cinemas– Little Women comes along to save us all from boredom. Just as I was about to think that nothing good can come out of Hollywood anymore- then Little Women movie comes out– sheer delight.

It was so good that the toughest critics of Rotten Tomatoes were so charmed they gave it 95% for certified Tomatometer Freshness, with an audience score of 92%


Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on her own terms — is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.

Saoirse Ronan obviously enjoyed the role and took it to heart. It was a good cast selection, each of the characters was memorable.

All you need is 20 minutes to immerse in the film, the characters become familiar to you, and you feel like a part of the story. Watching the family have a festive and happy meal during the holidays, the sight of love and passion was really masterful. It was a worth-it adaptation. Critics describe Little Women (2019) as a lovely film, that will make you feel extremely good walking out of it. It felt alive, it made the book of Louisa May Alcott feel alive.

The actors complemented each other, the film is also marked by strong performances. Little Women (2019) is a relevant retelling of the classic bestseller and has managed to remain real and poetic at the same time.

It will make you want to learn about the story of the real author behind it. It was enticing enough for you to dream and fuss about the 18th Century life and what it means to be a woman back in the day- and how much it has changed and what remains the same.
