The research they took was published in the journal of Translational Psychiatry. During the test, they took skin samples from people who were identified as having Bipolar disorder and people who do not have bipolar disorder for comparison.

The skin cells were exposed to controlled conditions and turned into induced pluripotent stem cells. These forms of stem cells have the ability to turn into other types of cells, afterward, they turned the induced pluripotent cells into neurons. They were able to measure and see differences in gene expression and realized that there are huge differences between stem cells derived from bipolar patients and those that were taken from people who do not have the condition. The neurons they took from Bipolar patients showed more genes for membrane receptors and ion channels than the neurons taken from non-bipolar patients in connection with receptors and channels used in sending and receiving calcium signals between the cells.

Calcium plays a crucial role in neuron development, and the differences in the early brain development of a person could be the reason why a person suffers from mental disorders like bipolar.

For example, when there are lithium changes it can affect calcium signals that are sent and received. These new cell lines are the ones who determine the mechanism behind specific cells of bipolar patients. Researchers found that some bipolar patients had issues during their brain development, their neurons suffer from signaling and misdirection and this could greatly impact them later on in life. This means that the differences they found out could mean that bipolar disorder could be caused by a combination of genetic vulnerabilities.

At present, the current medications being used are antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics. But unfortunately, some of these drugs have side effects that leave people with Bipolar disorder more uncontrolled symptoms.

As a result, a new wave of research is ongoingly fueled by Shinya Yamanaka’s Nobel-winning experiments on cellular reprogramming from almost a decade ago. His findings of creating induced pluripotent stem cells are now being applied to studying mental illness. These movements were largely inspired by the ability to make patient-specific stem cells- once we are able to that, then all sorts of disease could already be investigated.
